As part of our recent data streaming initiatives, we delivered several projects that required the implementation of an Operational Data Store (ODS).
An ODS is a central database that provides a current, integrated view of data from multiple transactional systems. It enables operational reporting by combining data from various sources—often in its original format—into a single place.
This allows businesses to:
- Access the most up-to-date snapshot of enterprise data,
- Perform fast and reliable reporting,
- Support tactical decision-making with near real-time data.
The ODS is critical in today’s IT architecture because it provides a consolidated repository where previously disconnected or poorly integrated systems can feed into a unified structure.
Reports generated from the ODS are often more comprehensive than those from individual systems, offering a holistic view of operational processes.
This unified and real-time perspective helps users quickly diagnose issues—for example, a service representative can instantly locate a customer’s order, check its status, and review troubleshooting info without needing to query multiple systems.
ODS also contains time-sensitive business rules, such as triggering automatic alerts when a bank account is overdrawn. These rules support process automation and ensure operational efficiency—something that would be impossible without current, integrated data.
Here is the example of ODS architecture which can deliver snapshot of enterprise data:
